Sumithra Prasanna is a multi-award winning filmmaker who has produced content for major media networks like Al Jazeera, A&E Networks, Vice, Channel News Asia (CNA), Walt Disney Television, Discovery Channel, and Star TV. She has rebranded non-profits, consulted with the UNICEF and J-PAL and operated her own content creation company crafting narratives for unscripted factual programming and commissioning teams in multiple geographies and markets for documentary production.
Sumithra is currently pursuing her doctoral research in Communication Sciences at Universidade Catolica Portuguesa, Lisbon. She is a CECC (Centre for Communication and Culture) Scholarship holder. Her research delves into the complexities of media representation and social justice, particularly focusing on the perceptions of Dalit rape survivors about their portrayal in media narratives. Her research interests centre on postcolonial studies, gender and journalism, media and caste narratives, and feminist studies.
