Jad Khairallah is a PhD researcher in culture studies at the Catholic University of Portugal-Lisbon. He holds a Master of Arts in Design from Notre Dame University-Lebanon. Khairallah’s work centers on exploring the intersection of shock, culture, and queerness, in the case of Lebanon.
His current dissertation examines how individuals navigate continuous shocks and instabilities while exploring the concept of desensitization in Beirut. Intrigued by persons who purposefully use shock and how it affects some bodies more than others, the fascination with the concept transcends its mere impact; it is about its nuanced place within the intricate materiality of the Lebanese culture. The research tackles the shocking power that non-normativity imposes on established cultural concepts, particularly concerning the queer body and the communicative practices of shock tactics prevalent in media, culture and the arts. Khairallah’s interdisciplinary approach encompasses queer theory, intersectional feminism, and Middle Eastern studies, as well as an interest in arts-based research.
Outside of his academic pursuits, Jad is passionate about teaching Arabic and has founded a small business in Lisbon dedicated to providing personalized language courses and cultural immersion experiences. In his spare time, he enjoys exploring the urban art scene, walking in the city while listening to hyperpop, and seeking out cute coffee shops. He’s also a pizza lover and a Libra, making decision-making a bit of an adventure.
