Noémi Étienne

Noémie Etienne is SNSF Professor at the University of Bern and a specialist in early modern art and culture. She is currently leading a research project on exoticism in the Enlightenment.

She was a scientific assistant (teaching and research) at the University of Geneva (2005-2011) and the University of Zurich (2013), and spent one year at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne as a SNSF predoctoral fellow (2009).

After obtaining her doctoral degree in Art History (Geneva and Paris 1) in 2011, she worked for more than four years in the United States: first as a SNSF post-doctoral fellow and visiting scholar at New York University (2012), then as a teacher und researcher at the Institute of Fine Arts (Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow, 2013–2015) and finally at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles (Postdoctoral Fellow, 2015–2016).

Her first book, The Restoration of Paintings in Paris (1750-1815) (Presses Universitaires de Rennes) was published in 2012, and subsequently translated into English and published by Getty Publications in 2017. Noémie Etienne also co-founded and directed the project Eternal Tour between 2005 and 2011, and a the founding editor of Journal18.
